Created: Sunday, May 25, 2014

The First Presbyterian Church of Newtown will host internationally known guitarist and composer Peter Griggs in a concert called 500 Years of Music for Guitar on Sun. Jun. 8 at 1:30 PM.

Mr. Griggs will perform music for the classical guitar from the Renaissance to the Contemporary era, including works by Gaspar Sanz, J. S. Bach, Bartolome Calatuyud, Django Rheinhardt, and Thelonious Monk, as well as flamenco, Brazilian music, and several of Griggs' own compositions. Griggs will also discuss the evolution of the guitar from its origins to its worldwide popularity in the 21st century.

Mr. Griggs has presented more than 450 solo guitar concerts through the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Low Countries, Scandinavia, and eastern Europe at concert halls, art centers, festivals, museums, churches, universities, cafes, clubs, and other venues. He has recorded on Folkways Records, Music of the World, Treecastle Music, and E360. The Dundee Courier (Scotland) called his guitar playing "sizzling" and the Bergische Morning Post (Germany) called him "an almost unbelievable talent."

The concert will take place in FPCN's sanctuary. Admission is $10 and will be collected at the door. For a preview of the concert, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2lFywZSjhI .
