Vegetable Garden Preparation Day on Sat. Apr. 22

Created: Monday, April 17, 2017

On Earth Day, April 22, events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It's a great day for us to get started on our vegetable garden! All of our resources are already in place for planting and we can look forward to another year of fresh organic vegetables grown in our own garden.

We are looking for volunteers to help us prepare our garden for another season. If you are interested, please contact Dolores Joseph via the church office.

Proceeds from the garden support our Sunday School Scholarship Fund, which provides a small stipend to our high school graduates moving on to college.

About the Scholarship Fund

The Presbyterian Church has always promoted the growth and development of children through education. This practice started in 1822 when the denomination became the first to start teaching religious education to all children, including children of color (who were previously excluded). Other denominations followed suit in the 1840s. Our church has carried this torch with over 300 years of Sunday School and assistance to people seeking to join the ministry.

For years, FPCN offered a small scholarship to its college-bound youth from the Deacons' Fund. In 2005, the Scholarship Fund took over. Funding comes from sales from our gift shop and annual flea market. Some of our high school graduates return during their college breaks. Those studying close to home attend church regularly, serve as deacons, and are active members of the youth group.

There is no cost ot the church for running the shop. Its stock comprises of donations from the congregation and friends. The organizers volunteer their service. The gift shop is located in the basement and is open for business after service on selected Sundays.

The shop needs donations to stay afloat. Please start clearing out those cluttered cabinets, attics, and basements of the good, saleable stuff.
